Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will the PONS Online Dictionary be expanded with other languages and functions?

Yes, we will be adding new languages and providing more services for learning foreign languages – you can already find the link to our tried and tested PONS LexiTrainer, and much more soon.

2. Can I use the Dictionary on my mobile device too?

Yes, the mobile variant for internet mobile and smartphones will soon be available at http://mobile.pons.eu

3. How often is the Dictionary updated?

PONS updates its lexical database nearly every day, and the PONS Online Dictionary is expanded and supplemented several times an hour thanks to the collaboration of users. Users are currently able to add their own entries to the following dictionaries: German-English/English-German, German-French/French-German, German-Spanish/Spanish-German, German-Polish/Polish-German.

The contributions from users are mostly found under the green PONS entries in the search results or – if no PONS entry is found – directly at the top.

4. How big is the Online Dictionary?

The PONS lexical database contains a total of 4,579,426 headwords, phrases, and their translations in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian.

5. When I find errors in the Dictionary or encounter technical problems, how do I report them?

To report an actual error or abuse in a dictionary entry please use our feedback form that you can fill out by clicking the letter icon shown in every entry. Alternatively you can click Contact and send us an email.

We gratefully welcome all tips pointing out errors as well as all kinds of comments, criticism, and suggestions for improvement. We thank you now for your feedback!

6. Is there an offline version of the Dictionary that can be used without connection to the internet?

The day’s current PONS Online Dictionary is available online only.

Our electronic dictionaries on CD-ROM though can be ordered comfortably online for the languages English, Englisch-Fachwörterbuch Banken, Finanzen und Versicherungen, French, and Spanish.

For PDAs, smartphones, and PCs: English, French, and Spanish.

7. Will the Dictionary always be free of charge?

Yes, the PONS Online Dictionary is free of charge for all users until further notice.

8. Can I translate one or more sentences with the Dictionary?

Yes! Click on the "Text translation" tab to translate full sentences in 3 languages.

PONS Dictionary shows you the whole range of meanings for a word and the rules governing its correct usage in the foreign language.

9. Can I add to the Dictionary?

Any time you like! Users are currently able to add their own entries to the following dictionaries: German-English/English-German, German-French/French-German, German-Spanish/Spanish-German.

Simply register the one time only, and off you go!

We advise you to read the instructions for new OpenDict authors before you set about creating your first entry.
