Schon 1721 wandten sich die Tabakspinner der freien Reichsstadt Nordhausen an den Rat der Stadt mit der Bitte um die Errichtung einer Zunft.
Eine Liste Nordhäuser Bürger von 1724 nennt zwei Tabakhändler und einen ( Ton-? ) Pfeifenmacher.
Die Tabakverarbeitung in der Stadt scheint im 18. Jahrhundert auf einem niedrigen Stand verblieben zu sein.
