Dottore Info
- This title can legally be used in Italy by anyone who has been awarded a degree after a course of at least 4 years of study. It is widely used in writing (on letters, printed on business cards) and as a form of address, when speaking formally to any graduate, not only doctors of medicine. There is a saying in Italy that “nobody is denied a doctor”, to mean that whoever holds a position with even a modicum of power or a public office, albeit a modest one, regardless of whether they are graduates, is always called “doctor” by those who wish to be deferential (typically secretaries, waiters, parking attendants).
